Iberia History
Incorporated in June of 1927, Iberia began operations in December that year and, within the span of a year, the company was sponsored by the government to offer postal transportation between Madrid and Barcelona.
Following the Spanish Civil War, the company became a strictly domestic airline. In 1944, it was nationalized and became a part of INI. Two years later, after the conclusion of the Second World War, it would become the first airline to offer flights between Europa and South America.
Transatlantic flights were given a boost following the Pact of Madrid (1953), which eliminated visa requirements for US visitors to Spain. Mass tourism through charter planes was allowed by the amendments to the Convention on International Civil Aviation made in Montreal in 1954.
By 1977, the airline served over 10 million passengers a year.
In 2006, the new Terminal 4 at Madrid Barajas Airport was given to Iberia and Oneworld alliance members. Today, Iberia is responsible for about 60 % of the airport’s traffic.
